Blaire Dorsey Photography at Novel.

April 21st, 2010

We were thrilled when the talented Kentucky artist, Blaire Dorsey (my beautiful cousin), agreed to hang her work at Novel., our pop up shop in Downtown Charleston for the month of April.  Her photos capture such a cool vibe of the small town, Sayulita, tucked away in the lush jungles just outside of Puerta Vallarta, Mexico.  You’ll love them – especially the ones framed in reclaimed barn wood!  (Very fitting this Earth Day)!

So, come have a look and grab them up before they are gone! We are popping out of here April 30th.

5 Looks for Charleston Fashion Week from Library & Balboa – Glam Rocks!

March 12th, 2010

Glam Rocks

Is that Lauren Lail on her own blog modeling her own vintage collection, yes, it is and how embarrassing!  I would have given anything to have one of the amazing models walking for Charleston Fashion Week (CFW) in here to do this for me, but Jane insisted that featuring our unique outfits for each day of CFW would look better on a body than on a mannequin, thus offering me up to do the “modeling.”  Grab up these Library vintage duds and Balboa jewelry pieces -mix it up with your contemporary pieces from our amazing local boutiques for the ultimate one-of-a-kind look!

So, here goes!  Stop in and see us at Novel. to purchase (you’ll receive 10% OFF if you purchase the whole look)!  If you have any questions about fit/size/etc.  just email lauren@libraryfashion.com or call 859-803-1371!!!

Opening Night Outfit - CFW

Kick it off big – GLAM ROCKS is the theme this year…so rock it with this vintage Rhoda Lee sequin crop top, vintage leather skirt and silver and gold balboa necklace!  If it’s still cool out add black tights and booties; if not, go bare and wear your highest heel!!!

Vintage Dress $89, Vintage Jacket $105, Vintage Belt $50, Balboa Earrings $42

Vintage Dress $89, Vintage Jacket $105, Vintage Belt $50, Balboa Earrings $42

Taking note from Mychael Knight’s new collection, Carte Blanche that features an edgy black and white palette, we thought it would be perfect to hit the show with this vintage peplum skirt dress (presh) layered under a bold-shouldered vintage white linen jacket.  This jacket is a staple for your wardrobe now and for years to come!  Loving the Balboa coin pearl earrings that stand out against the jacket.  To complete the outfit, we styled a purple snakeskin belt over the jacket (it may be hard to tell from the photo, but the dress has a touch of purple detail and the belt subtly brings it out).
Library Fleurs Top $72, Balboa Heart Necklace $138

Library Fleurs Top $72, Balboa Heart Necklace $138

Because there is nothing easier than pairing your favorite, most comfortable and stylish skinny jeans with a vintage top – this is your night to funk this simply chic outfit up with some hot heels and an armful of baubles. (don’t worry if you don’t have any, Jane has plenty here at Novel.) while watching some of your fave Charleston boutiques show their lines on the runway, Pearl & Hampden Clothing.

Library Ruffle Skirt $78, Balboa Necklaces $88, $98

To complement Ashley Reid’s concept of design that features short hem lines and color we’ve put an outfit together that represents her ease in style.  Pair your favoirte white tank with this cute and flirty Library ruffle skirt and layers Balboa necklaces!  Done and done!
Library Ballerina Skirt $88, Library Lace Cami $65, Balboa Opal Necklace $128, Balboa Layered Necklace $98

Library Ballerina Skirt $88, Library Lace Cami $65, Balboa Opal Necklace $128, Balboa Layered Necklace $98

Your Fashion Finale will end with this beautiful Library ballerina skirt and lace cami.  We are utterly obsessed with the lingerie look that has been shown as a huge trend for Spring 2010.  It’s a MUST HAVE…and is so soft and feminine.  We love that this coincides   Adding two Balboa necklaces is the perfect completion to this outfit.  Not photographed, but available, is the cutest soft pink lace clutch from Library that can be added to the look!

Best Of Charleston…Best New Shopping Trend…POP UP SHOPS!

March 11th, 2010

Charleston City Paper

by Erica Jackson Staff Pick

Taking a cue from cities like New York and San Francisco, Charleston dipped its toe in the Pop Up Shop trend several times this year. Local designers and companies without an official storefront — like Lauren Lail, Jane Pope, Lindsey Carter, and Marysia — got together with some of their peers to rent out an empty storefront and turn it into a local shopper’s paradise. With their selection of hard-to-find and handmade goods from some of the city’s most talented creators, it was always sad when the temporary shops closed their doors. But rest assured the trend hasn’t played out yet. Novel: Chapter II is the latest Pop Up Shop at 438 King Street, and they’ll be open through March 31.

Novel. Artist, Ruth Campbell featured on CHARLIE

When Charleston’s tough job market took a turn for the worse last year, one local recession baby hit the beach – literally.

Interior designer Ruth Campbell began gathering inspiration, and objects, from the beach around her Sullivan’s Island home to create incredibly unique home furnishings and decor.

The self-professed “home-decorating magazine freak” draws ideas from the world around her – everything from vintage advertisements to bold wallpaper prints inspire her. By blending prints and fabrics with natural beach finds (think colorful fan coral, driftwood and preserved sand dollars), Campbell is able to capture the vibrant essence of Sullivan’s Island in tidy pieces that mix well with any room’s motif.

Her line of home accessories, Libbie Home, was developed by chance during a lull between jobs in May 2009. In an effort to prove to her husband that her recent creations were more than “arts and crafts projects,” the ex-Domino Magazine editor began selling her pieces on the website Etsy. All it took was one sale for a hobby to become a business, and as each piece is one of a kind and handmade, Campbell has to work hard to keep items in stock.

Libbie Home is currently being sold at the month-long shop Novel, located at 438 King Street, which will run until March 31st. The temporary store features several local names and offers a range of items from jewelry and fashion to art and home furnishings. Campbell’s first piece of furniture, a driftwood table, will also be available.

With the weather still borderlining on unseasonably chilly (and rainy), perhaps bringing the beach inside will remind Mother Nature that Charleston is, indeed, a beach town.
